Roles & pay rates in Hourvy, in short
Hourvy's roles feature lets owners create roles such as Barista or Shift lead, each with a default hourly rate, and give individual workers their own rate for each role. A worker with several roles picks one when clocking in on their phone or at the kiosk, and the shift is paid at that rate. Overtime for workers on more than one rate in a week can use the weighted-average regular rate method. Reports show hours and labor cost by role.
Barista at $15, shift lead at $18. Same person, paid right for every hour.
Rates that follow the work
A worker with one role always works it. Workers with more pick one at clock-in, on their phone or at the kiosk.
Overtime done properly
When the week mixes rates, the weighted-average method pays the overtime premium on the week's average rate.
Schedule by role
Pick a role when you plan a shift and the schedule's cost estimate uses that worker's rate for it.
Raises don't rewrite history
New rates apply to shifts finished from then on. Finished shifts keep the rate they were paid at.
Fix the role later
Wrong role on a shift? Change it on Time Logs and the shift is re-priced at the right rate.
See where the hours go
The Hours by role report shows hours, labor cost and headcount for each role.
Up and running in three steps
- Tick Roles in Settings → Optional features.
- In Roles & pay rates, add each role with a Default rate / hr.
- Tick each worker's roles in their profile, and type their own rate if it differs.
Optional features are off until you switch them on, and are included in the price either way.
Good to know

Can one employee have two different hourly rates?
Yes. Give the worker two or more roles, each with its own rate. They pick the role when they clock in, and the shift is paid at that rate.
How is overtime worked out when someone has two rates?
With the weighted-average method, every hour is paid at its own rate and each overtime hour gets an extra premium based on the week's average rate. That's the method used under the US FLSA. You can choose to use the rate of the hours worked instead.
What happens to past shifts if I change a rate?
Nothing. Finished shifts keep the rate they were paid at. New rates apply to shifts finished from then on.
